003 - Amazing Grace, Amazing Control

How would you rate choice and control in your life? It's a tough question because more often than not, we don’t even realize when we have given our choices away to fear. We assume that nobody enjoys going to work...that everyone is burdened by a down economy...that no managers are motivational...that no companies empower their employees and that change is difficult for everyone! You're naive if that is your thinking and there is nothing more crippling to a person’s enjoyment for life than the absence of choice and control.

I assume this fits your transparent approach? Good article Jon. I like your outlook on life. My husband had just turned me on to your video posts and said I might enjoy and while I only watched one, I did enjoy. I'm more of a reader and had read your book. Your Grandpa looked like a great man and from you video, I can tell you are proud. Should I assume that by choice, you don't mean that he was able to choose the exact time and place but rather, let God know he was ready? That's how I took it, but my husband interpreted it more as a defined moment. Your Grandma looked sweet. Our sympathies go out to you and your family.

Tara, you would be correct in your assumption. By choice I mean that my Grandfather put himself into a position that fear would not hinder his choice. As mentioned in the video, he had lived with emotion, and when you do that...there will be fewer regrets and moments that you want to make up for. He also had his faith, or confidence. The idea is that when you live at Level Three, you are living in the moment but also preparing yourself for the future. My Grandfather knew his future, and I don't think there is anyone on this earth that would look forward to no longer being able to walk, see, eat or even use the bathroom without some sort of help. At a younger age, that seems obvious, but if you have regrets or you have fear, in the moment, that choice won't be so obvious.

I was doing my best to tie this idea into our careers because we could also say that we never would stay in a career that we did not enjoy. However, fear of the economy or money or whatever often forces us to do just that. To avoid these scenarios we need to improve two things: attitude and confidence, which just so happen to be the most important aspects to a persons success. Hope that helps.

Yes it does thank you! My husband and I read your response together and there was a collective sigh of understanding. Ha Ha. Therefore I go back to my original statement of, "I like your outlook on life."

I'm glad I read the comments because after my first watch, I wasn't really sure what point you were trying to drive home. It was explained much better in the response.

I always love to relate your subject of the story involving real life to that of the work force. Again, I can relate to this. I have been in a job that I stayed in only for fear of outside circumstances... only after being 'gently' persuaded was I given the confidence to leave... and with that decision came more growth in attitude, finance, and confidence than ever! Great article... I too am sorry about your papa...

In case anyone noticed, I made a mistake in saying that my grandparents married in 1962...they actually married in 1952. Sorry.

So very applicable to so very many aspects of our lives and our choices. Excellent.

Also, wanted anyone interested to know that if you'd like to view the video that was created for my Grandfathers Funeral, you can do so by visiting http://www.windowthree.com/brighteyes. He tells some really good stories in the video and provides great advice on what's most important in life.
